UK Work Pay

Do part-time workers get paid for bank holidays?

Bank holidays do not automatically give workers a separate right to paid leave. An employer can count them towards statutory annual leave. If comparable full-time staff receive a separate paid bank holiday allowance, part-time staff should generally receive the equivalent pro-rata allowance.

Example at 50% of full-time hours

If the full-time package includes eight separate paid bank holidays, someone working half the hours would generally get the equivalent of four full-time days. If a full-time day is 7.5 hours, that is 30 hours. Using hours helps where shifts vary in length.

What if Monday is your usual day off?

If you do not work Mondays, a Monday bank holiday should generally leave your pro-rata allowance available for other days under the employer’s booking rules. If a bank holiday falls on a usual working day and the workplace closes, check how many hours payroll will deduct from your allowance. Use the holiday entitlement calculator to estimate unused leave when leaving a job with a regular working pattern.
