Can you claim Universal Credit if you resign?
You can apply for Universal Credit after resigning if you meet the eligibility rules. If DWP decides you left work voluntarily without good reason and the sanction rules apply, it can reduce your payment.
How long can a sanction last?
For most claimants aged 18 or over, the first higher-level sanction is 91 days and a repeat can be up to 182 days. Special timing rules can affect the duration if you left work before claiming. The reduction generally applies to the standard allowance.
How to explain why you left
DWP assesses the circumstances. If there were serious workplace problems, health issues or safety concerns, explain what happened, when you raised it and why you left. Keep relevant records such as emails, grievance paperwork or medical evidence. If you disagree with a decision, you can usually ask for mandatory reconsideration within one month. If you cannot meet basic needs after a sanction, ask about a hardship payment.
